The Struggle with Social Media Comparisons: Social Comparison

In the age of social media, we've all been there – scrolling through our feeds, admiring our friends' seemingly perfect lives. While these platforms have connected us like never before, they've also given rise to a sneaky problem: social comparison. It's like a two-sided coin, and it can play tricks on our mental health. People often present idealised versions of their lives on social media, showcasing their accomplishments, happy moments, and positive aspects. These curated images can be far from the reality of their everyday lives.

When others compare themselves to these carefully crafted images, it can lead to a distorted view of what is "normal" or "achievable." Low Self Esteem is also a big concern. Constantly comparing oneself to others and feeling like you don't measure up can erode self-esteem. When people consistently see others succeeding, traveling, or enjoying seemingly perfect lives, they may perceive their own lives as less fulfilling, which can lead to feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt.

Social comparison can trigger jealousy and envy. These emotions can be harmful to mental health, as they often lead to negative feelings such as resentment, bitterness, and anger. This can create a sense of unhappiness and interpersonal tension. Negative emotions can lead to frequent social comparison which can evoke a range of negative emotions, including anxiety, sadness, and even depression. These emotions can affect one's overall mental well-being and lead to stress.
Social comparison can create pressure to conform to certain norms or expectations. People may feel the need to conform to these perceived ideals, even if they don't align with their true values and desires, which can result in feelings of unhappiness and inauthenticity.
